It is Impossible to Migrate a Symantec NetBackup Master Server from Windows to UNIX
According to Symantec, Symantec NetBackup's most popular platform is Microsoft Windows. Given The Fundamental Failings of Microsoft Windows it is really hard to believe that this is actually desirable for you as a backup administrator. The good news is that it is indeed possible to fix this situation, despite what Symantec tells you (see Kenny's Bloglog entry on this).
Given the following issues with using Netbackup as a Master Server on Microsoft Windows:
- Fragmentation when disk staging is used (and it should generally be used);
- Limited command line support (to automate tasks); and
- Poor performance (and poor instrumenting so you can't determine why it is slow)
It should be immediately obvious as to why one would want to migrate to the UNIX platform for backups. Symantec support indicated that they had no idea why anyone would want to do this.
