Linux Software RAID is more flexible than proprietary RAID controllers. You can take the disks from one machine and put them in another machine easily, no matter what type of card is being used by either system. RAID speed benefits from speed improvements of the system CPU, and additional CPUs. RAID functionality is regularly increased and well tested.
